TTC Streetcar Derailment Disrupts Downtown Toronto Commute, No Injuries
TTC Streetcar Derailment Disrupts Downtown Commute
A Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) streetcar derailed in downtown Toronto on Thursday morning, causing significant disruptions to transit service and road traffic during the peak commute hours.
The incident occurred just after 7:20 a.m. at the intersection of Bathurst and Dundas streets. Toronto Police confirmed the derailment and the resulting road closures.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the derailment.
Transit Service Impacts
The derailment led to service changes on multiple streetcar routes:
- 505 Dundas: Service was impacted, with detours in effect.
- 511 Bathurst: Service was impacted, with detours and no service between Bathurst Station and Charlotte and Oxley streets initially.
- 506 Carlton: Service was initially impacted but has since resumed.
Shuttle buses were deployed to help passengers navigate the affected areas. The TTC indicated that an overhead power outage, potentially linked to the derailment or a mechanical issue, was affecting service in the area.
Road Closures and Traffic Delays
To facilitate the response and investigation, road closures were implemented:
- Southbound Bathurst Street was closed at Dundas Street.
- Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Dundas Street were closed at Bathurst Street.
Police advised motorists to expect delays and consider using alternate routes.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation by the TTC. Crews were on site working to address the situation and restore service.
